Klaus Törnudd, a Finnish diplomat and political science researcher whose career included senior Foreign Ministry posts, university teaching and United Nations representation, died in Helsinki at 94 on Aug. 17, 2026. His family informed the Finnish News Agency STT, Yle reported.

Törnudd completed a Helsinki University doctoral dissertation in 1961 titled Soviet Attitudes towards Non-Military Regional Co-operation. From 1967 to 1971, he served as professor of international politics at Tampere University.

In 1978, Törnudd became head of the political department at Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, serving in that role through 1981. From 1983 to 1988, he was the ministry’s political under-secretary of state.

In 1988, Törnudd became Finland’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, the country’s senior diplomatic representative there. During his assignment, Finland successfully campaigned for a seat on the United Nations Security Council for 1989–1990. In 1992, Törnudd published Uuteen maailmanjärjestykseen: Suomi turvallisuusneuvoston jäsenenä 1989–1990, a book documenting Finland’s work during its Security Council membership.
