Enayatollah Bakhshi, the veteran Iranian actor who defined the antihero archetype in Persian cinema for six decades, died Feb. 15, 2026. He was 80. Bakhshi passed away following an undisclosed illness.

Bakhshi appeared in more than 170 stage plays and dozens of films, often portraying complex antagonists. He began his professional acting career in 1965 before serving a ten-year term in the Imperial Iranian Air Force as an electronics instructor. The actor returned to the Department of Theatre in the late 1960s, bringing a disciplined intensity to the screen during the rise of the Iranian New Wave.

He collaborated with influential directors including Ebrahim Golestan and Bahram Beyzai. His early filmography includes Mr. Naive (1970) and Tangsir (1973). During the 1990s, he performed in Travellers (1991) and The Fateful Day (1994). He also appeared in television dramas such as Imam Ali (1991) and Heroes Don't Die (1997).

The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance awarded him a First Grade Certificate in Art, an honor equivalent to a doctorate. In 2025, he received the Honorary Diploma for Best Supporting Actor at the 43rd Fajr Film Festival for the film Shah Naqsh. He maintained his status in the Iranian dramatic arts until the end of his life.
