Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old Welsh track and road cyclist, died Aug. 14, 2026, after a serious accident during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal, British Cycling said.
EL PAÍS reported that a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction entered the race route and struck Tarling. Medical crews were unable to revive him, and organizers halted the stage. The race organization initially confirmed only that a serious accident had occurred and did not assign responsibility for the collision.
Tarling had reached the Volta after progressing from junior track and time-trial racing into international road competition. He finished second in the junior Chrono des Nations time trial in 2023, one second behind the winner. In 2024, he helped Team Wales win the men’s team pursuit at the British National Track Championships, then helped Great Britain take bronze in the event at the junior world championships, where the quartet set a British national record.
By 2026, Tarling was riding for the NSN Development Team. He finished second and fourth on stages of the Tour de Rwanda, then placed 11th in the Volta a Portugal prologue and 15th in the Águeda time trial before stage eight.
