Alex Fiorio, an Italian rally driver who won the 1987 Group N world championship, died Aug. 17, 2026, at 61 of stomach cancer, SportMediaset reported.
Fiorio began competing in rallies in 1985, winning the Trofeo UNO on his debut with co-driver Mario Ferfoglia. In 1987, he won the world championship in the Group N rally category in Finland, driving a Lancia Delta Integrale.
He finished third in the 1988 World Rally Championship drivers’ standings and second in 1989.
In 2000, Fiorio moved into team management with Honda Benetton Playlife’s 125cc motorcycle world-championship team. The team won the constructors’ title under his management.
His later work included Rally University, a rally driving school built on two decades of experience as a driver and instructor. He also created the Fiorio Cup, a rally event in Puglia that reached its fifth edition.
