Antonio Mereu, an Italian politician who served as a deputy in the national parliament for twelve years, died Feb. 10, 2026. He was 83.

Born Jan. 22, 1943, in Sant'Antioco, Mereu entered politics as a member of the Union of the Centre (UdC). His career focused on his home region of Sardinia, where he eventually secured a seat representing the island on the national stage.

The Sardinian politician first won election to the Chamber of Deputies on May 19, 2001. He held his seat through successive elections, serving as a member of the UdC delegation for three consecutive terms before leaving the chamber on March 14, 2013.

Mereu died in the city of Carbonia, concluding a public career defined by more than a decade of service in the Italian legislature.
