Sepp Piontek, a German football manager who led the Denmark national team and played as a defender for Werder Bremen, died Feb. 18 at age 85 following a short illness. He spent his entire professional playing career with Werder Bremen from 1960 to 1972, where he helped Werder Bremen win the Bundesliga championship in 1965. The defender also earned six appearances for the West Germany national team during the mid-1960s.
His professional focus shifted to management following his retirement from the field in 1972. Piontek moved to Denmark in 1979 to lead the national team, initiating the "Danish Dynamite" era that saw the nation rise to international prominence. Under his direction, the Danish squad reached the semifinals of the 1984 European Championship before losing to Spain in a penalty shootout. Two years later, he guided Denmark to its first World Cup appearance in Mexico, where Denmark won all three group matches before falling to Spain in the round of 16.
The Danish Football Association inducted him into the Danish Football Hall of Fame in 2011, making him the first foreign national to receive the induction.
