Robert Mouynet, a French defender who was part of France’s third-place squad at the 1958 FIFA World Cup, died on August 19, 2026, at 96, OneFootball reported.
Mouynet began his club career with Toulouse. In 1953, the club loaned him to Cannes, where he spent two years in France’s second division.
After Cannes, Mouynet joined Olympique Lyonnais in 1955 and played 149 matches for the club through 1959. He started Lyon’s first two European matches, against Inter Milan in December 1958 and January 1959.
During his Lyon years, Mouynet was selected for France’s squad at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. France finished third. Mouynet had no senior international appearances when he was selected and never made one afterward.
After leaving Lyon, Mouynet returned to Toulouse, where he played from 1959 to 1963. He was the last surviving player from France’s third-place 1958 World Cup squad.
