Raja Sen, an Indian director whose work spanned Bengali television, documentaries and feature films, died Aug. 16, 2026, at 70, Telegraph India reported. He had been admitted to SSKM Hospital days earlier in critical condition and was receiving ventilator support.
In 1990, Sen directed Itihaaser Kolkata, a five-part Doordarshan series about Kolkata. His 1992 documentary Suchitra Mitra won the 40th National Film Award for Best Arts/Cultural Film.
Sen moved into feature films with Damu, which won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film. He followed it with Atmiyo Swajan, winner of the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare.
His documentary Aalkaap won the Best Documentary award from the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association. In 2016, he directed the Bengali drama Maya Mridanga. His final released film, Bhalobasar Galpo, came out in 2019.
