Lorraine Bayly

Lorraine Bayly, an Australian actress who became a familiar presence to television audiences as an original presenter of Play School and later as Grace Sullivan in the wartime drama The Sullivans, died Feb. 28, 2026. She was 89. She died in a Sydney nursing home; the cause of death was not disclosed.

Bayly joined Play School in 1966 as one of the program’s original presenters, helping establish its calm, direct approach to speaking to children. For many viewers, she was part of the show’s early on-air identity, appearing in the long-running series as it became a staple of Australian family television.

She went on to prime-time drama and became widely known as the matriarch Grace Sullivan in The Sullivans, which aired from 1976 to 1983. Bayly later starred as solicitor Jennifer Carson in Carson's Law in a role written specifically for her, and she said the show’s courtroom speeches were “hellishly difficult to do.”

Beyond television, Bayly performed on stage in productions including Death of a Salesman, Travelling North and The Sound of Music, and her final theatre appearance was in 2016. She also appeared on film in The Man From Snowy River.

Across children’s television and mainstream drama, Bayly built a career that placed her in the everyday routines of Australian audiences for decades. Her best-known work—welcoming young viewers on Play School and anchoring family life on The Sullivans—remains central to her public memory.
