Janardan Waghmare

Janardan Waghmare, an Indian educationist and politician, died March 2, 2026. He was also associated with the Nationalist Congress Party and later served as a Rajya Sabha member. He was 91.

Waghmare’s public career moved between education and civic politics in Latur. In 2001, he won the Latur Municipal Council president’s post on an NCP ticket, a position that raised his profile in local public life and set the stage for a wider political role.

In education, he was best known for shaping what became known as the “Latur Pattern,” an approach built around intensive preparation and coaching pedagogy. The method was credited with helping students from Marathwada rank highly in competitive examinations, and it became closely associated with the region’s reputation for disciplined exam training.

As a parliamentarian, Waghmare used Rajya Sabha procedures to press policy concerns. He raised the issue of an "influx of illegal Bangladeshi migrants" in an unstarred question dated Oct. 22, 2008, and later asked about funding under the Green India Mission in another unstarred question dated Dec. 12, 2013. He continued to weigh in on political debate including commentary attributed to him in July 2023.

His later work included institutional and public recognition. He was selected for the 2021–22 Shahu Puraskar, which included Rs 1 lakh along with a citation and a trophy, and he was listed as chair of the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre’s district centre in Latur. His name remained most closely tied to the Latur Pattern and its influence on generations of students from Marathwada.
