Jackie, a wild American bald eagle and the female in the Big Bear Valley nesting pair near Big Bear Lake, California, died Aug. 10, 2026, at 14, according to The Associated Press. Her nesting life was followed through a long-running livestream.
In October 2015, Friends of Big Bear Valley organized and installed the first camera at a Big Bear bald-eagle nest. The camera made the nest and surrounding habitat visible to the public, allowing viewers to follow Jackie’s seasonal nesting.
In 2019, Jackie and her mate produced two chicks, Cookie and Simba. Cookie died May 27, likely from dangerous loss of body heat during a rain-and-snow storm with freezing temperatures, while Simba left the nest on July 23 for a first sustained flight. In 2022, Spirit hatched March 3 and left the nest on May 31 for a first sustained flight; a second egg did not hatch.
In 2025, three chicks hatched. Misty died March 13 during a multiday storm, while Sunny and Gizmo left the nest for their first sustained flights on June 2 and June 7, respectively.
In 2026, Jackie and her nesting partner, Shadow, had two eaglets, Sandy and Luna. Sandy and Luna left the nest for their first sustained flights on June 28 and June 29, respectively.
