Gianluigi Jessi, an Italian Olympic basketball player who represented Italy at the 1968 Mexico City Games, died Feb. 24, 2026. He was 80. The cause of death was not disclosed.
In Padua, Jessi was best known for his years with Petrarca Basket. He was a central figure in the club’s defining 1960s–1970s period associated with its Tre Pini identity. He also played for CUS Padova, and later for Partenope Napoli and UG Goriziana.
At international level, Jessi made 63 appearances for Italy’s senior national team and scored 270 points. His Olympic selection was the peak of his playing career and placed him on one of Italy’s biggest stages in the sport.
After his time on the court, Jessi became a local cultural figure through his work preserving community heritage. He founded the Museo Veneto del Giocattolo in Padua’s Mandria area and remained its director until his death.
