Firmin Ayessa

Firmin Ayessa, a Congolese politician who served for years at the center of the Republic of the Congo’s executive power as a senior presidential aide and minister, died Feb. 17, 2026, in Istanbul, Turkey. He was 74. His death was attributed to heart complications. He was best known as minister of state in charge of the civil service, labour and social security, a post that placed him among the most influential managers of the country’s public administration.

Closely identified with the presidency of Denis Sassou-Nguesso, Ayessa was associated with the day-to-day mechanics of government and the coordination that keeps ministries and institutions moving in step. In his ministerial portfolio, he oversaw key areas touching the public workforce and social protection, linking personnel administration with labor oversight and the functioning of the state.

He was also regarded within the governing circle as a steady hand in political organization and communication, helping shape how the presidency’s priorities were presented and aligned across institutions. Colleagues often described his influence less in public spectacle than in the internal discipline of administration and the messaging that accompanied government decisions.

After his death, the state moved quickly to honor him. A national day of mourning was decreed for Monday, Feb. 23, under Decree No. 2026-86 signed Feb. 21, with flags ordered at half-mast and unauthorized public events banned, though the day was not declared a public holiday. An official tribute ceremony was held the same day at the Palais des Congrès in Brazzaville in the presence of the presidential couple and state institutions.

Ayessa was buried Feb. 24 in Ondza, his native village near Makoua in the Cuvette department. His legacy was rooted in the work of state administration and in the political strategy and communication that supported presidential governance.
