Dumitru Marcu, a Romanian footballer who played in attack for Universitatea Craiova and helped the club win its first league title, died Aug. 13, 2026, at 76, Realitatea Sportiva reported.
Marcu moved from Steaua București to Universitatea Craiova in spring 1972. On Oct. 14, 1973, he scored twice for Romania in a 9–0 win over Finland in World Cup qualifying, the national team’s biggest victory.
In the 1973–74 season, Craiova won its first Romanian league championship, with Marcu playing 25 league matches and scoring seven goals. Craiova won its first Romanian Cup in 1976–77, with Marcu playing in the final against Steaua București. The club retained the trophy in 1977–78, when Marcu again played in the final and scored in a 3–1 victory over Olimpia Satu Mare. He won his second Romanian league title with Craiova in 1980.
