Bożena Dykiel, a Polish actress known for prominent roles in television, film and theatre, died Feb. 13, 2026. She was 77. The cause of death was not disclosed. Her death was first announced publicly by Rev. Andrzej Luter.
Dykiel was best known to television audiences as Maria Zięba in the long-running series Na Wspólnej, a role she played for more than two decades. Her long tenure on the show made her a familiar presence in Polish serial drama.
In theatre, she was widely associated with her performance as Goplana in Adam Hanuszkiewicz’s staging of Balladyna, remembered for a striking entrance in which she rode a motorcycle onto the stage. The entrance was later noted in accounts of the production and of Hanuszkiewicz’s staging.
Across screen work, Dykiel built a reputation for vivid character acting and comedy. Among her best-known roles were Miećka Aniołowa in Alternatywy 4, Mada Müller in Ziemia obiecana and Sonia in Znachor. She graduated from the State Higher School of Theatre in Warsaw and received major state distinctions, including the Bronze Cross of Merit and the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture “Gloria Artis.”
Through decades of work in theatre, serial television and landmark Polish films, Dykiel remained one of the country’s most recognizable character actresses.
