Borger Breeveld, a Surinamese actor best known for playing Roy Ferrol in Wan Pipel, died of kidney failure in the Netherlands on Aug. 10, 2026, at 82, Suriname Herald reported.
In 1976, Breeveld played Roy Ferrol, a Surinamese student returning from the Netherlands, in Wan Pipel, the first Surinamese feature film. The romantic and political film addressed national identity, ethnic divisions and Suriname’s direction after independence.
Breeveld later worked in television and media management at the Surinamese Television Foundation. He made Mmanten Taki, a current-affairs program about issues affecting Surinamese society.
He later helped establish Film Instituut Paramaribo with Arie Verkuijl and filmmaker Pim de la Parra, taking part in efforts to develop Surinamese film and other screen production.
In August 2010, Breeveld attended the Paramaribo premiere of a fully restored and digitized Wan Pipel. At Suriname’s third communications congress in 2021, Breeveld received a lifetime media award. The award recognized his work in television, media management and film institution-building.
