Barry Knight, a longtime member of the Virginia House of Delegates and a key architect of the state’s budget, died Feb. 19, 2026, of renal cell carcinoma. He was 71.
Knight began his career in agriculture, building Barry D. Knight Farms into a major hog operation. The Virginia Farm Bureau named him Young Farmer of the Year in 1983. He managed the production of thousands of hogs annually and continued his farming operations until 2016, working as a farmer for most of his time in politics.
His legislative career began in 2009 when he won a seat in the House of Delegates representing the 81st district. He later represented the 98th district and eventually rose to lead the House Appropriations Committee. In this capacity, Knight directed the Commonwealth's fiscal policy and oversaw the state's multi-billion dollar budget process for over 15 years.
Colleagues such as Delegate Jay Leftwich pointed to Knight's broad influence on Virginia’s infrastructure, including the funding of roads, bridges, and government buildings. Governor Abigail Spanberger described Knight as an individual who embodied the role of a citizen legislator through his dual focus on farming and public policy. Knight held his seat in the House of Delegates until his death from kidney cancer. His work on the Appropriations Committee defined the state's fiscal priorities for more than a decade.
